This university brief asked for a concept for a new edition of 'Charles Dickens A Literary Life'. The brief specified dimensions of 170 by 245mm (portrait) and one colour production (black). The proposed design was to be a functional solution for the supplied text, and appropriate in appealing to contemporary, adult readers. This project served as an introduction to editorial design and to fully realised and appropriate use of InDesign, optimising the use of master pages and style sheets.
An early alternate grid, layout and paragraph styles option.
This alternate design becomes restricted and easily cluttered with a narrow line length on the grid for both the main text and the footnotes. I ultimately chose (what became) the final style to develop as it appeals to the contemporary reader. Whilst withholding elements of – as a nod to – the more traditional style, as the book is about an author of classics.
